In somewhat an out of nowhere announcement, it was announced during the NXT broadcast that next week’s edition see the return of The Great American Bash, beginning a two-week special event.

This will be the first event including The Great American Bash name since 2009, when WWE held The Bash on June 28 live on PPV.

The name originally stems from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), as the inaugural show happened all the way back in 1985. The main event of that one saw Tully Blanchard defend the NWA World Television Championship against Dusty Rhodes inside a Steel Cage. WCW carried on with the name before eventually closing down, and WWE used it as a PPV until 2009.

35 years after the first event, it will be resurrected in a whole different way. Night one of the NXT two-night event will see the No. 1 contenders match for Io Shirai‘s NXT Women’s Championship between Tegan Nox, Mia Yim, Candice LeRae, and Dakota Kai plus NXT’s first-ever strap match between Dexter Lumis and Roderick Strong, as well as Rhea Ripley facing off against Aliyah, and Robert Stone in a handicap match.

Night two will see the first-ever Winner-Take-All match in NXT history as Adam Cole will put his NXT Championship on the line and Keith Lee puts his NXT North American Champion on the line after successfully defending it against Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano on Wednesday night.

This special event is set to compete against AEW’s two-night event, Fyter Fest, which also begins next week.
