On this week’s Being The Elite, The Lucha Bros announced Laredo Kid as being the third member of their team when they go up against The Elite (Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks), arguably the most popular trio in the industry, at AEW Fyter Fest on June 29. However, adding Laredo Kid to this match teaming up with the new AAA Heavyweight Tag Champs, who just beat The Young Bucks at this past Sunday’s AAA Verano De Escandalo, could prove to be a tough obstacle to overcome for The Elite. So it begs the question, who is Laredo Kid and what do we know about him?

Lardeo Kid is the current AAA World Cruiserweight Champion and a current World Trios Champion with his tag partners, El Hijo Del Vikingo and Mysteziz Jr. Laredo Kid is a grizzled veteran who had close to 15 years in the Lucha World. He wasn’t always known as Laredo Kid as he began his career as El Exterminador (The Exterminator) but changed that ring name fairly quickly to be known as Laredo Kid, which signifies The Kid from Laredo, MX of which he was born and raised (Nuevo Laredo, MX).

At only 32 years of age, Laredo Kid started his career at the tender age of 16. He would begin his career in 2003 working in the Mexican Independent Circuity for 2 years before getting his big break and working for AAA Lucha Libre. It was there where the name Laredo Kid was born and the character never looked back. The kid would make his debut at the 2005 Verano Del Escalando where he teamed up with Los Barrio Boys (Alan, Billy Boy, and Decnis) in a loss to Gran Apache and the Black Family (Cuervo, Escoria, and Ozz). Throughout his first year, he would be in quite the number of tag matches until the Fall of 2006 where he would be involved in a 12-Man single elimination tournament called “Por Un Sueno” (The Dream Tournament). The kid would eventually win the tournament when he defeated Gran Apache and Kaoma on September 17th, 2006.

Laredo Kid was one of the participants in the original Alas de Oro (Spanish for “Wings of Gold”), but was eliminated by the eventual winner, “Extreme Tiger”. At TripleMania XV Laredo Kid and Gran Apache defeated Super Fly and Super Caló in a Relevos Suicidas tag team match, which resulted in a forced match between Super Fly and Super Calo in a “Lucha de Apuesta”, mask vs. mask match.

In August 2007 Laredo Kid, and El Oriental, Histeria and Antifaz traveled to Japan to compete on Pro Wrestling NOAH‘s 2007 Shiny Navigation tour that ran over ten events from 2007 until 2009. On most of those nights, Laredo Kid would team with El Oriental against Histeria and Antifaz, sometimes booked in six-man matches teaming with Ricky Marvin while Histeria and Antifaz teamed with NJPW’s Rocky Romero.

On September 3, 2007, on the last night in Japan Laredo Kid teamed with Super Fly to defeat Atsushi Aoki and Ippei Ota on a joint AAA/NOAH show called TripleSEM. A few weeks later Latin Lover, La Parka and Ricky Marvin to defeat the La Legión Extranjera team of Abismo Negro, Ron Killings, Kenzo Suzuki and X-Pac in one of the feature matches on the 2007 Verano de Escándalo event. Laredo Kid would get the pinfall on X-Pac, Laredo Kid’s biggest win to date at that time.

In the same year at the Antonio Peña Memorial Show, Laredo suffered a leg injury during a match where he was participating in the Copa Antonio Peña Gauntlet match, wrestling Ron Killings (R-Truth). During the match, a hurracanrana off the top rope went wrong and Killings landed on Laredo Kid’s leg ultimately breaking it. The injury kept Laredo Kid out of the ring until early 2008.

Laredo Kid would not see the end of the injury bug, however, when In June 2008 Laredo Kid would reinjure his leg during a Lucha de Apuestas match due to the steel rod in his leg was never surgically inserted properly. The match saw Sangre Chicana sacrifice his hair to save the injured Laredo Kid’s mask. The injury kept Laredo Kid out of the ring, stopping his push as both Super Fly and Aero Star became the focus of Real Fuerza Aérea while Laredo Kid was away and continued to work higher profile matches than Laredo Kid after he returned to the ring.

While Kid would return several months later, throughout the rest of his first tenure with AAA, he would participate in many other matches, but would no longer see the push he was meant for prior to his injuries. Laredo Kid would leave the company in 2011 and would wrestle again in the Mexican Independent circuit for a few years.

In 2015, he would work for WWE when he participated in a dark match under the name Tony Guevara, where he would team with AEW’s Sammy Guevara in a dark match against Los Matadores on WWE Main Event on April 7th. While things did not work out for him in WWE, he would continue to work in various promotions such as The Crash, GCW, TNA, and many more organizations.

In 2017 to be specific, Laredo signed with IMPACT Wrestling and debuted on March 2, teaming with Garza Jr. in a tag match defeating Eli Drake & Tyrus. Two days later on March 4th, Laredo Kid and Garza Jr. entered a four-way tag team match for the vacant IMPACT World Tag Team Championship but lost to team Latin American Exchange (LAX) (Ortiz & Santana). On April 22, Laredo Kid and Garza Jr. entered a tournament for the Global Force Wrestling World Tag Team Titles but were eliminated in the first round by Latin American Exchange. Three months later on July 2 at Slammiversary XV, Laredo Kid & Garza Jr. entered a four-way tag team match with both GFW World Tag Team Championship and Impact World Tag Team Championship belts on the line but lost once more to team LAX. Laredo Kid wrestled his final IMPACT Wrestling match on July 6, ending in both he and Garza Jr. losing to El Hijo del Fantasma & Naomichi Marufuji in a tag team match.

The Kid would return to AAA in a trios match where he’d team with El Hijo Del Fantasma and Extreme Tiger versus the team of Brian Cage, Psycho Clown, and Rey Escorpion. While still working tag matches, it was at the Lucha Capital Tournament that aired in November 2018 exclusively on Facebook Live, where Laredo had a string of spectacular singles matches. In the midst of this, however, he would find AAA gold when he, El Hijo Del Vikingo and Mysteziz Jr. won the AAA Trios Championships versus the team known as El Nuevo Poder Del Norte ( Carta Brava Jr., Mocho Cota Jr. & Tito Santana). Meanwhile Laredo Kid would not win the Lucha Capital tournament, however, he eventually would be granted a World Cruiserweight match against the former champ, Sammy Guevara on February 19th, 2019 during a television taping.

Laredo has since been a top name for the company and recently came off of what many Lucha experts are considering as the Lucha match of the year when he faced El Hijo Del Vikingo in a one-on-one match for the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship 10 days ago on June 9th, 2019, in Monterrey, MX and would win. The kid is currently involved in an angle with Daga who is currently attempting to be a belt collector in AAA and looking for every title, possibly starting off with Kid.

As if that wasn’t enough for him, The Kid from Laredo is now involved in a big money match come to Fyter Fest when he teams up with The Lucha Bros versus The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. It’s safe to say that Laredo Kid has come full circle in his career, and if there is a story to tell here, it’s that Laredo Kid, at 100% is easily one of the best in the world, and has quickly proved that within the last several months and at only 32 years of age, the best is yet to come.
