Mr. Niebla’s Alcoholism Bans Him From CMLL and Mexico City In General

Former Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre World Heavyweight Champion Mr. Niebla got his wrestling license suspended this week. El Rey del Guaguancó can’t compete for CMLL or any wrestling promotion in Mexico City, including his scheduled match this coming weekend for CMLL’s 85th Anniversary show.

Drunk in the Ring

Last Tuesday, in the Main Event of Arena Mexico’s Nuevos Valores show, Mr. Niebla was visibly drunk in the ring. The match featured La Peste Negra which was Rey Bucanero, Negro Casas and Mr. Niebla against Atlantis, Mistico and Volador Jr. Fans started to wonder about Nieblas condition when he went to the top rope to raise his arm in his entrance and fell off the ring.

This made Volador Jr. switch gear and think about the health and security of his fellow wrestlers. Volador unmasked Niebla in the second fall – barely minutes into the match – so that the match could end in two straight falls. Fans started to boo the show and Volador got a lot of heat from the crowd. In an interview, Volador replied by stating that Niebla was in no condition to wrestle that night and that he had to protect the integrity of the sport and the health of his fellow wrestlers.

Not The First Time for Niebla

Back in 2015, New Japan Pro Wrestling had CMLL run the FantasticaMania tour in Japan with talents from both companies. Niebla suddenly disappeared in the third night and was later found unconscious. NJPW took him to the hospital and made CMLL pay the bill – this made CMLL furious and Niebla was fired on the spot when he got to Mexico. A similar story  happened this year with CMLL wrestler Drone.

Niebla back in April admitted that he had an alcoholism problem and that he was fighting everyday to keep himself sober. He admitted that in his 25 year career, this problem has been persistent and that he fights them every time, but that is very difficult.

Out of Aniversario 85 and Mexico City

Mephisto will now substitute Niebla in the Aniversario 85 trios match involving Negro Casas & Felino against Ángel de Oro, Niebla Roja & El Audaz. The Mexican Commission of Boxing and Wrestling suspended Niebla’s wrestling license and now has to compete outside of Mexico City, which holds the largest company and biggest shows. Niebla could join AAA once again or The Crash since is out of that territory, but many fans want him to take care first of his addiction to alcohol. Alcoholism is a problem that is widespread in Mexican wrestling, with wrestlers getting into the ring drunk and ridiculing themselves. Niebla has to take care first of his demons.
